Certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy with Children and Adolescents

During this 4-day interactive training program, participants will be introduced to cognitive behavioural techniques and strategies for working with children and adolescents.

  • The ABC’s of dysfunctional behaviour and emotional disturbance will be learned.
  • Specific dysfunctional beliefs will be explained.
  • Methods for replacing these beliefs with more functional thoughts will be outlined.
  • Specific CBT approaches effective with children and adolescents will be taught.
  • Behavioural management and contingency management.
  • Parenting and consultation skills will be included.
  • Participants will have an opportunity to practice these new skills each day.

Daily Structure:


  • Lecturer Input (9:00am – 12:30pm)
  • Lunch & Practice Session with Partner (12:30pm – 2:00pm)
  • Skills Supervision (2:00pm – 5:00pm)

Cancellation Policy:  Cancellations must be received in writing to CBT Australia.  Refunds are given (less 10%) for cancellations received by 5 pm a minimum of 10 days prior to the commencement of a course. Cancellations received AFTER this date, are ineligible for a refund, however may be transferred to a future course and will incur a 10% transfer fee. Registrations are transferable to another person upon notification.

Course Outline:



DAY ONE: Introduction to CBT with Children & Adolescents

Morning:

  • Principles and practice of CBT
  • ABC’s of CBT Approaches
  • Dysfunctional thoughts, feelings and behaviours
  • Cognitive Restructuring
  • Live Demonstration

Afternoon:

  • Participants will practice identifying dysfunctional thoughts and their relationship to dysfunctional emotions
  • Role playing in Triads
  • Questions and discussion


DAY TWO: Applications of CBT with Children & Adolescents

Morning:

  • The interface between CBT and child and adolescent development
  • Basic principles of CBT as specifically applied to young clients
  • Introduction of C.A.T. model
  • Assessing thoughts, feelings and behaviors: specific developmental considerations and techniques
  • Creative, developmentally appropriate disputation techniques
  • More effective techniques to help children and adolescents enhance their emotional and behavioral well-being
  • Video tape demonstration/child or adolescent client

Afternoon:

  • Participants will practice creative cognitive restructuring approaches.
  • Role playing in Triads.
  • Questions and discussion


DAY THREE: Applications of CBT for use with Parents

Morning:

  • Dysfunctional beliefs held by parents (need for approval, perfectionism & LFT)
  • Behavioural management techniques in managing Children and Adolescents
  • Consultation skills with parents
  • Managing parents’ emotions
  • Teaching High Frustration Tolerance to parents

Afternoon:

  • Participants will practice behavioural management techniques with parents
  • Role playing in triads
  • Questions and discussion

 

DAY FOUR: CBT for Internalising & Externalising Disorders

Morning:

  • Key factors in assessing and treating child and adolescent depression
  • Key factors in assessing and treating child and adolescent anxiety
  • Effective CBT intervention strategies for treating depression and anxiety in young clients
  • Creative, effective CBT intervention strategies for treating other internalising and externalising disorders in young clients, such as: self-depreciation, procrastination, perfectionism, acting out, underachievement, grief, stress, frustration

Afternoon:

  • Participants will practice using CBT with young clients
  • Role playing in triads
  • Questions and discussion
