Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Australia is committed to the promotion of excellence in cognitive behaviour therapy in Australia through the provision of therapy and professional training.

It is a logical and practical approach to help people with their emotional problems. Based on the assumption that people are not disturbed by events in their lives but by their belief about those events, it is an extremely empowering therapy, often bringing relief after short-term treatment. Today there is considerable evidence from research that cognitive behaviour therapy is effective.

It is not a new idea that beliefs lead to distress. In the First Century AD, Epictetus stated "People are disturbed not by things, but by views they take of them." Fifteen centuries later, Shakespeare’s tormented character Hamlet explained, “...there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

Cognitive behaviour therapy as we know it today was pioneered by Albert Ellis in the 1950’s and 1960’s with rational emotive behaviour therapy. Aaron Beck subsequently developed cognitive therapy. These therapists are influential in the work at Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Australia.
